Another year down, I can't think of a more fitting Cut of the Month
than a selection from the UNCLE JIM record titled "Flashback". Listen
and repeat. This is the mantra for the new year.
The month of December started off with a bang by getting a call from
local label LIGHT IN THE ATTIC. They told me they had 40 reels of
tape from Toronto Reggae label Summer records. All of these tapes are
vintage 70's reggae coming out of Toronto at that time. What a fun
project, hearing alternate takes, goofs, dubs, live recordings, etc.
Goes right along with my research these days.
On Sunday morning I received a call from the ANIMAL COLLECTIVE about
some footage I shot during the recording of "Feels". They were
looking for some additional footage to include on the companion DVD
to their US single to be released soon. I had some footage and went
to town editing a full blown music video for Fickle Cycle (a B-side)
using this footage. I think it came out pretty good. Look for it in
February or March.
Just prior to X-mess I spent two weeks in Montreal with ARCADE FIRE
to demo out some songs for their follow up to Funeral. We were
covered in snow the whole time, but that didn't stop us from
recording some decent tracks. This recording is taking place in an
1880's church in the outer province east of Montreal. It's a former
Masonic Temple with 23' ceilings. They've installed a Calrec board
from the BBC, a smattering of cool compressors, 2" Otari's and
started a decent mic closet. I supplemented from my esoteria of mics.
More to come as I'm returning later in the year to do the rest of record.
Just after X-mess SIR RICHARD BISHOP stopped by with a editing
project of a vinyl edition of electronic pieces. Very dark, very
evil, very good. Not sure of the release date but it's for Locust.
The year ended by doing detective work with Glenn Jones (Cul de Sac)
and re-visiting the JOHN FAHEY Fonotone Project for Revenant. Glenn
and I sifted through some recent finds and tried to identify some of
the unknown pieces. I'm so glad this got pulled from the grave as
there is some priceless stuff on here.
Now I leave you with my picks from the year 2005. They are in no
