Cut of the Month is a band from Seattle called UPSOYO. A pop rock band
(for lack of a better word), Upsoyo is fronted by singer/guitarist Kerry,
who has quite an interesting voice and diction. Upsoyo's songs are of the
ilk you'd hear on the radio, yet, you won't... but if you want to you can
pretend! Just close you eyes and listen to Upsoyo on
scottcolburn.com. C'mon, it'll be fun!
CLIMAX GOLDEN TWINS has been working on its side project, Victrola
Favorites. We hauled all of out victrola's down to the studio and played
60 sides over two days, recording them on six different machines with a
mono mic placement to a 32-bit hard disk system. Ooo, seeexy! The
recording is designed to capture the acoustic experience of listening to
these discs on their official playback device, only now, because of our
hard work and dedication to you - the listening audience - you may partake
in this experience without the added drudgery or expense of purchasing and
maintaining one hundred year old equipment and discs. You're welcome!
CHRIS WALLA (Death Cab for Cutie) was in for a few days to mix HOURGLASS
LAKE - a quirky local pop band. I didn't do a damn thing other than give
Chris the Yamaha tour and engage him in conversation about Clinic,
engineering, and the woes of touring.
Mighty mighty MUDHONEY stopped in to put the final touches on their three
songs for the new SubPop album due later this year. Wait till you hear
this one - it'll face the skin off your face and blow your head off.
LORI GOLDSTON and KYLE HANSEN helped me conduct an experiment recording
cello and accordion using one microphone in various parts of the room. The
mic even ended up face down on a blanket stuffed inside an open accordion
case (isn't that hilarious?). We felt that playing this recording back
through the Califone talkback speaker and re-recorded in the main room
yielded the best result. Our geek fest was thoroughly enjoyed by we three
mad geniuses.
ELVIS was in the house to scratch a vinyl record on victrola (for that "old
world charm"). After scarring the record with a file and nails, we took it
to the glass shop and applied the Dremmel tool and ~viola!~ instant noise
damage. ELVIS normally lives as a DJ in Berlin.
If you were listening to KEXP 90.3 a few days you got to hear my live mixes
of the BELFURY's and ROSIE THOMAS. If you missed those shows, you were
probably doing something else.
JULIAN MARTLEW was in to record a demo with LEFT ON RYERSON. Their Limp
Bizcuit/Linken Parkish sound is sure to get the ladies dancing.
FAITH & DISEASE were in to start on a new album project. I was truly blown
away by this band and hope you get a chance to check this group out
soon. They are Joy Division-esque dark wave with Debbie Harry's
voice! Every track on this album is a winner, and I'm truly excited to see
where this project leads them.
SEAN MEEHAN flew in from New York to transfer and mix some tracks he did
with SACHIKO M (and boy are his arms tired :]). It's basically all test
tones created with a tone generator and a snare drum. Weird, wild stuff.
EVAN FOSTER was in briefly to transfer a BOSS MARTIAN's reel for demo
purposes. It was fun to hang out with him and talk about guitars,
psychotronic films and AC/DC.
MACHETE continued work on their album by completing the vocals and solos on
their quasi-traditional Cuban music.
Finally, MAUREEN WHITING stopped by for some editing on a piece she is
choreographing for a Cornish School of the Arts senior project.
Lululemon!
