Cut of the Month is FAITH & DISEASE's "She's Got A Halo" from their
forthcoming album "Passport to Kumming", due out on Projekt Records in
June. The buzz says FAITH & DISEASE sounds like Joy Division and/or New
Order - listen for yourself and see if you agree, then tell me what you think.
ELLEN FULLMAN and TARI NELSON ZAGAR were in to record their own creative
compositions (as only they can pull off) of Autoharp, violin, and, uh...
"water machine" (?!). Even after all these years of working with avante
garde musicians, I can't adequately describe the "water machine" Ellen has
invented this time - it consists of a series of self-contained levels by
which water drips from its main source in to a metal pan at a certain
interval, which is then picked up by a mic, the ambiance of which is fed to
an amp. Good golly, Miss Molly - what an innovative idea! How lucky am I
to work with such genius? (Those In-The-Know will remember that Ellen is
the inventor of the Long-Stringed Instrument, of which only one exists.)
XXX AUDIO continued to track their punk pop record with me, which was a
great deal of fun and madness. I can't imagine what it must be like to
hang out with these people on a regular basis - they fried my wife and me
in a single evening, yet inspire the oi-oi in us both!
ERIC ANOMALOUS was in to master a new Jeph Jerman CD of Shaker Table
recordings.
CLIMAX GOLDEN TWINS began their new record of, well... we can't say, actually.
Alan Bishop took on the huge task of transferring the SUN CITY GIRLS
materials from the 27 reels of tape that were recorded back in 1997. What
will become of them is anybody's guess, but I'll keep you updated here.
MUDHONEY recorded "Hard On for War" with me this month at Soundhouse, and I
don't mind saying it rocks! I'm sure I'll get a great deal of e.mail about
this one, especially if it's released "on time" for GWBush's little war games.
I spent a moment in time at Self Adhesive Recording Studio to track some
new FEAR OF DOLLS material. Unfortunately, I was terribly ill, so I had to
leave after set-up. Thankfully, my pal Jon took the helm.
I made an appearance at Bad Animals to re-do a surround mix for the HEDDA
GABBLER trailer, and at Soundhouse began a solo bassoon recording with RYAN
HARE, which sounds more amazing than one could imagine. I also recorded an
interview with KENNY GARRETT (who played with Miles Davis) at KEXP, and
continued my work on the Ornette Coleman box set throughout the month of
February.
Whew! Now the pressure is on since the Charlie Patton box set won all
three Grammys this year! I've asked Revenant for a time share on the
statue, but the jury is still out on that.
24 hours to go.
