Cut of the Month is CERBERUS SHOAL'S "Sole of Foot of Man". CERBERUS SHOAL
is the group I recorded in Maine this past January. This particular cut
reminds me of Flo and Eddie-era Zappa material in the way that the chorus
vocal harmonies are put together. Mastered by Ed Brooks at RFI CD
Mastering in Seattle, this record should see the light of day in a matter
of months.
At the helm at KEXP 90.3 FM in Seattle (but available all over the world
through the web), I mixed broadcast performances by FOLK IMPLOSION, LAURA
VIERS, THE MORE, ASAHI, WATER KILL THE SUN, and LANDS FARTHER EAST - all
excellent bands. Most of the performances are archived on the radio
station's website, so try going back to hear them again.
STEFAN HAKENBERG traveled down to Seattle from Juno, Alaska to record the
sound track for the film "Displacement Map," directed by Theo Lipfert. The
ensemble consisted of violins, cello, guitar, koto, oboe, flute, trumpet,
and euphonium - very avant garde modern classical music.
Work continues on the transfers of ORNETTE COLEMAN's 1978 tour.
Additional sessions were booked for RYAN HARE's solo bassoon
recording. I'm excited about this project because it is truly unique, but
it will be a while before it is released - I estimate the edits to be
around 600!
XXX AUDIO continue mixing their fabulous punk-pop record. It's close,
though - real close - so hang in there. You'll be rewarded for your patience.
JIMMY ST. CLAIR came in to knock off a quick demo of his pop songs with an
Elliot Smith feel.
DHRUP CHAND brought in a group of players (and a whole bag of kava kava) to
record traditional Fijian music. Dhrup plays the harmonium and sings in
the Bhajan style, which is similar to East Indian music.
CLIMAX GOLDEN TWINS continue work on their next record, but took a few
moments to rehearse for upcoming shows. and to record a compilation cut
titled "Have a Dance". We also recorded a one hour radio program for an
British radio program called Resonance.
Speaking of the UK initiative. The current issue of Sound Projector
(available in the states via anomalous.com) has interviews with Climax
Golden Twins, Dave Knott, Jesse Paul Miller and myself.
Also, My pal Ian Christe's book titled "Sound of the Beast - the Complete
Headbanging history of Heavy Metal" has a photo of Die Kreuzen that I shot
in the early eighties.
