We are not sure if it is summer yet or not here in Seattle. I THINK it is,
but I'm not sure. Regardless, the studio is booked all "summer"! The bad
news is that I wish I had more time to fit everyone in. We will see what
happens...
Remember - several updates ago, I refered to sound engineers doing music as
"engineercore"? Well, I recorded an engineercore performance here in
Seattle last month, and it was a blast! This performance included Climax
Golden Twins, Doug Haire, and Tucker Martine (set-up in different corners
of the room), all based on location recordings and completely improvised.
It worked QUITE well. What was perhaps most mind-blowing was that a lot of
people showed up - a LOT of people!!! I recorded this event with two
separate sources: 1) I hung a stereo pair from the ceiling in the middle
of the room, sending that one to a DAT machine and then sent it to a radio
transmitter (which broadcast the entire event live), and; 2) utilized a
pair of Sonic Studio microphones (which I wore on yellow sun glasses),
which fed to a DAT machine in my backpack. I "roamed the room" all night
so that I could record the ambiance from varying angles, which worked out
beautifully. My roaming did not sit well with one attendee, however, who
felt it necessary to accost me with a loud "Why don't you hold still for a
second!" in the middle of the show. I, of course, ignored the poor
midguided misfit - can I help it if we don't all understand art?
FAINTLY MACABRE were in the studio moments before their breakup to record
some really great, haunting tracks which remind me of Saccharine Trust, or
maybe Come. They are hard to pin down as I hear elements of different
bands in these tunes. This band features members of Kent 3 and Treepeople,
which makes it a "Super Group", right?
BARE KNUCKLE BOXERS completed their demo recording of amplified-Irish-
Folk-music-performed-by-ex-punkers. Can you feel what I'm saying? You can
check out mp3's of this session on <bareknuckleboxers.com>, and I would
encourage you to do so!
LEATHERBOY started tracking a compilation cut last month, which we did on 4
track reel at their rehersal space. You reeeeeally need to watch out for
this group! The Rocket gave them a great review recently - I mean a
reeeeeally great review - which only proves the The Rocket can (sometimes)
be trusted for their knowledge of good music.
OTA-PROTA superstar Adam McCollum was in the studio remastering their
second EP, which is receiving heavy rotation on KCMU lately. This fusion
of jazz, rock and soundtrack music will definately tickle your
head-bobbin' bone.
YOUNG COMPOSERS COLLECTIVE tracked a recording of the music that they
performed at On the Boards recently. This was one of those rare sessions
wherein everything works with very little tweaking. Imagine - you have a
12 piece orchestra in your studio, throw up every single mic you have, the
sound is great, you adjust the cello and add a bass DI, and you are
ROLLING! It only happens once in a blue moon.
Some of you have noticed that I have added a new feature to the web site
(<scottcolburn.com>), entitled "Cut of the Month". This month's features
are: 1) Wicker Palate and his brand of retro beat music - check it out in
real audio format - and; 2) A sample of the Pint Sized Spartacus album
(which is really more musical theatre/drama than a pop album), Charles
Gocher Jr.'s solo concept album (Charlie is the drummer for SUN CITY
GIRLS). I put Charlie's samples up on "Cut of the Month" because I'm
offering a special to you, my loyal Monthly Update readers, of $7 ppd in
the USA! Check out the sample, and if you like it take advanatage of my
hospitality. No, really - take advantage of me, please! Oh PLEASE!
Until July...
