Cut of the Month is WATER KILL THE SUN. This is from the fourth
record I've done with this group. You may remember me waxing poetic
about this recording in past updates, but in case you don't here it is again!
>WATER KILL THE SUN is reformed, re-organized and started recording
>(what I think is) their best effort to date. This time out creating a
>very nice collection of down tempo, shoe gazer indie pop. I'm really
>excited by this material and can't wait for it to be unleased upon the world.
So now, the material is hitting the streets and the cut this month is
a taste of that record. http://waterkillthesun.com
Light in the Attic dumped two great transfer projects in my lap. The
first being mix reels and master reels from KAREN DALTON sessions.
This record was recorded at Bearsville in upstate NY and sounds
incredible! The tapes were in excellent shape. "In My Own Time" was
released in 1971 and featured members of THE BAND. read more at
http://theband.hiof.no/albums/in_my_own_time.html. The cool thing
about this project was that a majority of these reels were mix reels.
What that means is that you hear the engineers mixing the record over
30 minutes and hear them trying to perform the best mix. Usually the
take at the end of the reel is leadered, indicating the best mix.
Sometimes it's grooving along really nice and a reverb is hit too
hard and you hear the tape stop and rewind. Oh, how I miss those days
of multi-armed mixes with cue sheets.
The second transfer was the first BETTY DAVIS record! This is the
Betty Davis that was married to Miles Davis for a year and was
rumoured to have introduced Miles to fusion which spawned "Bitches
Brew". This record is amazing. It was made in San Francisco at Wally
Heider's and was produced by Gregg Ericco who played drums on the
record with Larry Graham on bass. These two were the rhythm section
for Sly and the Family Stone. The Pointer Sisters did backup vocals!
It's amazing! Read more at http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Betty%20Davis.html
If you are in Chicago on August 18th, you may want to stop by the
Music Box theater for a showing of my video for the ANIMAL
COLLECTIVE's song "Fickle Cycle". This video appeared on the bonus
DVD included in the band's US single "Grass". Fickle Cycle is being
shown at 9:45pm as part of the Chicago Underground Film Festival.

Also, in the film festival world, two films which I did Sound Design
for are making the rounds. ICE CREAM ANTS and WALKING TO WERNER are
both making the circuit. More info about these films are at
http://crutchfilms.com and http://linasfilms.com respectively.
In the July issue of EQ Magazine there is a review I wrote about a
Yamaha hard disc recorder. What's extra special about this review is
that they printed a photo of me holding the Yamaha unit and I'm in
full wizard's garb. You can see it and read the review here.

FEAR of DOLLS stopped by to do a cover of a Tractor Sex Fatality song
for a split 7" with both bands doing a cover of each other's music.
This super dense sludge-country version that the Dolls did is huge.
Lot's of space, lot's of distortion and a super clear/clean Bonnie vocal.
Wynne Greenwood (who is LIBBER) started production on her record.
Most of the music had been recorded at home but we re-amped just
about everything to put some space in it and are re-doing all the
vocals. This music is best described as dirty pop. More later.
