A hearty Happy Fall to you all!
CUT OF THE MONTH is by Luminous Flux. This group combines drum loops and
classic keyboard sounds with electric guitar and operatic vocals to create
music reminiscent of Portishead and early, early, early Human League.
Listen and jam, my friends!
There have been a few CDs released recently of recordings I've warned you
about here in my monthly updates:
First, ELIZABETH FALCONER's Deep Pool is now available at kotoworld.com.
This CD features Liz's koto compositions recorded at the Seattle Asian Art
Museum earlier this summer.
Volume 4 of SUN CITY GIRLS' onslaught of archival recordings - "Bullet
Through the Last Temple" - comprised mostly of "jazz" material recorded
during the 27 reel session of 1997, is now available.
CLIMAX GOLDEN TWINS' release of electronic and computer-based compositions
is also now available in CD form on the Meme label, and will soon be
available in vinyl on Anomalous Records. This is not the "rock" album
you've heard so much about (and of which I am so enthusiastic), but is the
release we finished over a year ago. Let me know what you think!
A few changes have occurred in my life and at the studio, too. First - and
most importantly - I married my girlfriend of five years ,
this past September 1st. It was a perfect celebration true to our natures!
And on that same day I aquired another 400 square feet of studio space,
doubling the amount of square footage I originally had for artist set-ups.
The Gravelvoice Empire grandly expands... I am the luckiest man alive!!!
OTA PROTA has finished their record and is currently shopping it with
several prominent labels, all of which are showing real interest. Their
music combines Thrill Jockey-esque trances and beats with Bjork style
vocals and wild techno effects. When you hear this you will definately need
to wear your plastic pants.
DUANE RUBINOWITZ was in putting the final touches on his Zappa-esque
carnival of sound and humour.
ROBERT WALKER was in to record a full album's worth of solo guitar and
vocals - I can't quite describe his style; it's sort of like the MARC OLSEN
stuff I did many years ago but the oddball chord changes make it more like
a solo BOB DYLAN. Cool stuff!
BLACK CAT ORCHESTRA has be helping me with my Music Production Class at the
Art Institute of Seattle by coming in to record the Hindi Pop song "Jan
Pechan Ho" from the movie "Gumnaam". Some of you may remember this piece,
which was covered by The HEAVENLY TEN STEMS in SF.
ELIZABETH FALCONER also came in to my class with her koto ensemble to
record an original composition. We recorded her in such a way as to
facilitate a surround sound mix at a later date.
33 FAINTING SPELLS and KYLE HANSEN have been in numourous times to continue
work on their dance masterpiece, which will premier in Portland next month
and play in Seattle after that. Don't worry, Kyoko - NY'ers will probably
get to see this as well as ya'll in Austin. A CD of the music will follow
with a grand collection of styles ranging from spy music to circus music,
turkish delights to improv madness. All systems check! Lasers and
Commentary. Actually, that's not included but it should be.
I also drove out to Bainbridge Island (the Professor from Gilligan's Island
still lives there, you know) to do a film shoot for 33 FAINTING SPELLS in
an abandoned boy's school. Ours was a day shoot with plenty of great shots
and a great crew. More on this later.
I finished the mastering of the 4 CD JOHN FAHEY Fonotone recording, which
is set to be released by Revenant later this year. It sounds great and is
quite a document!
STEVE BARSOTTI and his spring frame instrument came by to record the
instrument in various places in the building which houses the studio. His
instrument is handmade and has brass rods, stretched springs, dowel pegs
and metal filaments - it really should have been featured in "Gravikords,
Whirlies and Pyrophones". Which reminds me... I recently learned of
another cool thing about my dad: I showed him a picture of Harry Partch and
some of his instruments and he said, "Yeah, that's the guy." Apparently,
my father went to U of I at the same time Partch was a resident there, and
my father attended Partch's recitals. I KNEW it was in my blood!
SUN CITY GIRLS were in to begin work on a several projects, part of which
include shortwave radio compositions, international recordings and song
overdubs. More later...
Finally, look for a technical article in Mix Magazine about my experience
at the Experience Music Project within the next few months.
My best to you all!
