Hidee ho, boys and girls!
CUT OF THE MONTH is by Elizabeth Falconer, Aiko Shimada and Mako. Known
collectively as DRAGONFLY, they recorded a beautiful CD titled "Island
Dreams", which blends traditional music from Japan, Okinawa and
Hawaii. The featured cut has a somewhat Western feel with a clip clop
rhythm and familiar melody. Listen... and prepare to be amazed!
August was all about KEXP. As always, most of these performances are
available for rebroadcast from their website <www.kexp.org>.
LUKE TEMPLE - The mix for his first song had such an intimate feel
to it I almost cried. Very Fahey-influenced.
MOST - The cutest band I've done on the radio, complete with a Go
Go's feel.
MINUS THE BEAR - A very popular pop group these days, and for good
reason. They push the envelope just enough.
OVERTON BERRY - It's not everyday that you get to mix a true
classic. This guy played soul music in the 70's in Seattle. With the
release of the "Weedle's Groove" compilation, Overton was brought to the
studio to perform. Thanks to my teacher Malcolm Chisholm for teaching me
the ways of authentic soul recording. (Is it Stax or Memorex?)
ROBB BENSON - Known as a member of Dear John Letters, this guy has
the most impassioned singing I've heard in a long time - just belts 'em out
from the heart.
SPYPLANE - Extremely well-rehearsed math rock.
TOMMY STINSON - This ex-Replacement member has embarked on a solo
tour, and sounds fantastic.
SENSATION JUNKIES - The singer was so excited to play on the radio
that he forgot all about using the mic.
DANIEL HARMANN - Not only does Daniel have that high male vocal
that makes women swoon, he also proposed to his girlfriend on the air
during this show. What a romantic, touching moment for all in the studio
(and those listening in)!
THE UPSKIRTS mastered their record last month, which should be available
soon. Watch out Buzzcocks fans, here come The Upskirts.
CLIMAX GOLDEN TWINS did a live show with BLACK DICE and ANIMAL COLLECTIVE
in preparation for our world tour (well, an East Coast tour, at
least). Our new record is steadily climbing the charts: It was #29 on
Dustedmagazine.com's site, and #178 on CMJ as of this writing, not mention
in the top 20 on a half dozen stations across the country. What a thrill
for us, especially after all of these years. The bonus surround sound
remix of "Dead People" is still available on my website, by the way.
If you happen to make any of the following shows, be sure to say hello -
we'd love to see you. We will be playing with CERBERUS SHOAL on this tour,
a band well worth seeing. (You may remember that I recorded CS's last
album a few years ago, and hosted them during their WA and OR gigs earlier
this year.)
