I know that many of you WITH IT's already have IT, but in case you didn't know... THE CAPTAIN BEEFHEART BOX SET IS NOW AVAILABLE to the general public!! What's more, it's encased in an incredibly handsome package for your viewing-as-well-as-listening pleasure. Cut of the Month is a remix I did of "Japan in a Dishpan", which features guitar, bass and drums, only. The story behind this remix is that one of the tapes I received for the project contained a section in which these three instruments were separated out. Lo and behold it had a reference point, so I put them into the computer, sync'd them up, and mixed the piece - what you will hear is the result. Let me know what you think.
I have also made some VAST IMPROVEMENTS TO THE GRAVELVOICE WEB SITE, including: ~~A debut of Gravelvoice Radio, where you will find all of the
files available on my site in a single playable file - hence, those of you with 56K (or better) modems can now listen to the real audio files while surfing the site, you lucky ducks!; ~~Residents Radio - all of the Residents album samplers in a single file;
~~ Gravelvoice Television, on which a few Real Video files feature ODIR live, Sun City Girls in the recording studio, and a short animated film I made in 1980; ~~An easier-to-read catalogue page, which now contains some severly reduced prices on a bunch of back-stock, including Sun City Girls and Revenant products. The vinyl album sale is still going on, by the way, with hundreds (literally!) of great records still for sale. You're welcome.
A NEW ADDITION TO THE GRAVELVOICE WEB SITE is a new column I'm writing for Tape Op magazine. Entitled "Recordings That Changed My Life", the first installment centers on Black Flag's "My War", which will appear in Tape Op's October issue. The web version includes real audio files which demonstrate the points made in the article. In the future, I will write about other important records by Caroliner, Rolling Stones, Insane Clown Posse, Tar Babies, and Chrome.
NEW RELEASES AVAILABLE NOW (aside from Captain Beefheart) include: ~~ Amy Denio's Greatest Hits on Unit Circle Records; ~~ Japanese Rumba, a compilation released by Yakuza records, which includes a John Vallier cut (immediately preceding a Sonic Youth piece); ~~The new issue of Halana, featuring a live cut I recorded for Rick Bishop of Sun City Girls; and ~~A CD-Rom titled Millennium Mind Capsule, which allows the user to "play" different instruments in a "symphony" (fun!). My involement with the latter was the recording of Dave Knott's hand-made string instruments. It's really a very cool CD-Rom - you can be a conductor and tell each instrument what to play and when to start and stop, which is perfect for you control freaks and budding musicians (same thing). This CD-Rom was programmed by Glenn Engstrand, who resides in San Francisco - please contact him at <touchles@sirius.com> if you are interested in the project or wish to own the CD-Rom. Tell him Scott sent you.
REALLY-EXCITING-YET-SO-FAR-SECRET-PROJECTS that I just can't wait to tell you about involve **** ******, who were in to digitize a ******* **** *******, a cut of which may appear on a ******* of ******. I was also contacted by **** ******** to ****** a bunch of ***** for ********** to ****** ***** to see how they stack up against ***. The end result, of course, was that ** rules the planet. We wish them well!
JEPH JERMAN was in to record a solo drum set single to be released on Anomoulous. Jeph was very excited about it, as was I.
Work continues on the recording of YOUNG COMPOSERS COLLECTIVE's soundtrack for Scream! Lion Dogs, which was performed at On the Boards (here in Seattle) earlier this summer. Ours is an edited recording which will be released soon. A cut of one particular piece is available on the Gravelvoice web site.
OTA PROTA was back in the studio this month to record new material for an EP which will be released early next year. Their brand of jazz/rock/fusion is really something to hear! (A cut from the forthcoming album appears on the Gravelvoice web site.) At times I hear Amon Duul, other times I hear Pink Floyd - it's hard to pin down, so YOU decide.
Happy Sneak Some Zuccini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Month!!
