I think it's safe to say that this Beefheart project is very
interesting to say the least. The most interesting masters are a
live reel from 1972 in NYC and a recording from 82 in Seattle. But
the biggest treat was to hear some of the house recordings done for
Trout Mask. These were not released. I'm still not sure what will
make it on the final disc set but let's say it's some pretty
powerful stuff that doesn't sounded dated at all. How someone
composes pieces like that and then finds people to play them is
beyond me.
The studio is moving to new digs! October will be a transisitional
period at the studio because we are moving to a bigger, better
commercial facility with 10' ceilings. Out of the basement and into
the fire! or was that Out of the fire and through the woods. Who
knows?
Elizabeth Falconer did more recording for her duets project with
trumpeter Angelina. This combination of koto and trumpet is
facinating. Liz has expressed interest in editing some of the past
duets with Lori Goldston, Ed Piasandamp; Ellen Fullman, so a new CD
master will be making it's way into the cold cold world. If anyone
is interested in this...let me know.
Climax Golden Twins completed a soundtrack to Grass, which was
shown at the Grand Illusion in Seattle. Grass was made by the same
director of King Kong. It was made in 1925 and chronicles the
journey of a nomadic tribe of 50,000 people in what is now Iraq.
This soundtrack was composed entirely of 78rpm recordings. The
scratchy quality of the records meshed very well with the scratchy
quality of the film. Climax Golden Twins are now beginning work on
a CD project for the Japanese label meme.
I recently mastered a Richard Youngs CD for a friend in town. This
CD is so beautiful! It is just acoustic guitar and vocals but it is
breath taking, full and ethereal.
Tommorrow I'm going to the mastering session for the Leatherboy CD.
I've spoken about this CD before. Leatherboy reminds me of
Bassholes at times. This recording features John from Steel Wool on
keyboards and bass. This is another project that doesn't quite have
a home. Contact me if interested.
Solar Federation have been in having me complete tracks on their
demo. The basic tracks were recorded at another studio. Their sound
is influenced by Zappa, Crimson and Fred Frith.
I've just begun work on a full length CD for First Hand. This
Seattle (via Boston) duo have rich vocal harmonies with acoustic
guitar and some percussion. The vocal harmonies it what gets me.
I'll keep you posted.
Just a reminder, the Residents are playing the Fillmore again this
year on Halloween. I strongly suggest you go if you can. It's an
amazing experience.
I'm not sure how all this legal stuff works for sending bulk email.
Suffice it to say, if you are receiving this, you've been receiving
this for at least a year. If you've started to receive this
recently, you requested it. Still...if you want to be removed, just
return this mail to me and you will be removed. This is the way it
has always been and this is the way it will always be.
Now I'm off to see Nick Cave!
