CUT OF THE MONTH is from the 33 Fainting Spells production "September, September" which is playing Portland right now. It will also play in Seattle, Austin and Richmond, VA later this year and next. The cut is only a glimpse into this complex soundtrack which includes spy music, circus music, psychedellic, improv, turkish, sound effects, etc. It runs the gamut. There are two singles (vinyl) available at the performance and a CD of the music will follow.

LITTLE CHAMPIONS were in to record two songs for their new release on Barsuk. The bulk of the material was recorded by Larry Crane at Jackpot! but these two pieces needed to be included. They have a B-52's or X-Ray Spex influence weaving through their music.

PHILIP DESOTO has kept us busy for most of the month with his brand of Mexican traditional music, including a Neil Diamond cover "Girl, You'll be a Woamn Soon". Look for it as a cut of the month soon.

DOUG THERIAULT stopped by to mix an improv with Wally Shoup, and Toshi which was recorded in Philly a year ago. Doug also played on some tracks supplied by Jeph Jerman. This ultra quiet recording is facinating in a minimal way. Doug had a small scrub brush on his guitar that barely moved, but emitted massive sound.

YOUNG COMPOSERS COLLECTIVE completed their master of Scream! Lion Dogs which will hopefully see the light of day soon. This 12 piece orchestra crammed into the studio to produce a soundtrack that resemblles Japanese Kabuki music and is actually for Butoh. But that's as far as the similaritys go. Witness the thunderous taiko drums and odd ball horn arrangments.

Mid month the local Grammy office held a STUDIO SUMMIT which was a gathering of studio owners, engineers and producers from all over the Northwest. The keynote speaker was Steve Albini and was extremely successful. If you'd like to read my recap from the Summit which will be printed in the local Grammy Newsletter (The Sound), email me and I will send it to you. It will also be posted on my web site.

The last week of the month was spent in the stinky city of LA for the Audio Engineering Society's Annual Convention. A recap of this event is also available by request. Let me say this, the convention was pretty cool. The A-list engineers are thoughtless, Fred Katz (Word Jazz, Little Shop of Horrors, Bucket of Blood) is an amazing person as well as musician, Marty and Elayne are still playing at the Dresden Room and people drive better in LA than in Seattle!
