CUT OF THE MONTH is PHILIP DESOTO's cover version of Neil Diamond's "Girl,
You'll Be a Woman Soon". We spent most of October on this project of
Traditional Mexican Music from the 40's, but we also slid in this cover
which I'm sharing with you now. I never really liked Neil Diamond, if you
want to know the truth, but this is a catchy little ditty and Philip is
good enough to pull it off!
I'm pleased to report that several recent projects have won awards or
"special mentions". LYNN SHELTON's film "The Clouds that Touch Us Out of
Clear Blue Skies" won the Judge's Award for Best Documentary at the
Northwest Film Festival 2000 (the judge was Todd Haynes, director of Velvet
Goldmine). With a soundtrack composed by LORI GOLDSTON, this film
documents the emotional rollercoaster women experience after a miscarriage.
-- ELIZABETH FALCONER's CD "Plum Boy" won the Parent's Choice Gold
Award! "Plum Boy" offers fascinating traditional Japanese children's
storys adapted into English and accompanied by koto. This award is akin to
being chosen for Oprah's Book Club. -- Also, THE WIRE Magazine (UK),
listed my website among its "200 essential websites" ("Your essential guide
to the best homepages for artists, labels, music resources and
organisations..." in their cover story of the 200th issue. WOW!
There are a few releases you may want to know about:
1) The long awaited CLIMAX GOLDEN TWINS' vinyl issue of their electronic
record is finally available through anomalousrecords.com;
2) BLACK CAT ORCHESTRA; and
3) KYLE HANSEN's music from 33 Fainting Spells' production of "September,
September".
The key thing about these particular releases is that they have all been
released on vinyl, and I always love the way my recordings sounds on this
medium. These are all very limited releases, though, so act fast if you
want to get your mits on them.
Not one to rest following her recent award, ELIZABETH FALCONER was back in
the studio to record another children's CD, this one titled "Hana and the
Dragon" (which is being pressed as I write this). We both feel this is an
even better CD than the first, so perhaps it will get a _double_ gold star
for our efforts!
SUN CITY GIRLS were in to continue work on their songs and abstract
environmental pieces for future release.
FIREBRAT was in to do a few more songs, and I'm telling you right now that
this is the best music I've worked on in a very long time! FIREBRAT is
truly what a band should be - they write catchy pop numbers and play them
on Hammond, Rhodes, drum and bass... it's sort of like Freddy Mercury
fronting the Attractions. Their tunes are infectious and are so damn good
you won't mind having them live in your head long after you've put the CD
away. Listen to an audio sample on the website and tell me if I'm wrong.
Next month's CUT OF THE MONTH will be from this new session - now's there's
something worth looking forward to!
Ciao!
